GOP Family Values | PolicyNC
I sure hope I can stop writing about Madison Cawthorn after May 17th. If I have to talk about his primary victory, that says more about the Republican Party than Cawthorn. In fact, all of this, his entire political saga, says a lot about the GOP.
Cawthorn has come under fierce attack for everything from his outright lie to his sex life, with plenty of evidence to back it up. The latest hit is a video that shows Cawthorn naked in bed fucking her male cousin. It was the end of a buildup that began with a video of the same cousin grabbing Cawthorn’s crotch while Cawthorn was driving down the road.
Cawthorn claims they were just boys having fun. The problem is, it’s not a boy. He is a 26-year-old man who is also a member of Congress. The tapes are only harmful because he’s been so hard on the LGBT+ community and because he’s a Republican. Being gay, or bisexual or whatever, isn’t really a liability in the Democratic Party, but it can be a killer in the GOP.
Cawthorn has built his career on being outrageous and a victim. He started as a longtime congressional candidate who defeated the GOP front-runner in the runoff. He’s been dishonest about almost everything, from the accident that kept him from walking to his rejection by the Naval Academy to promoting baseless and outrageous accusations of child sex rings that make echo Qanon’s nonsense. And yet he’s leading the pack in the Republican primary because honesty and candor aren’t necessities in today’s GOP.
Lying, promoting unfounded conspiracy theories, making false accusations, these are just standard GOP fare. They are not condemned by elected Republicans. Hell, Donald Trump is the leader of the party. But being gay? Katy bars the door.
On Twitter, News & Observer columnist Sara Paqueno speculated that Cawthorn is now in trouble because he “insulted the GOP”. She notes that the attacks escalated after he claimed to have seen other members of Congress taking cocaine and said they had invited him to orgies. She really seems to be right.
Most of the trash Cawthorn spouts isn’t much different than what Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar, or Lauren Boebert spouts. We don’t see the stories coming out about them the same way they come out about Cawthorn, even though they’re there. Greene cheated on her husband with other gym instructors, but they were straight. Lauren Boebert’s husband exposed himself to two girls, one of them a minor. Again, Trump paid a porn star to keep quiet about a one-night stand. These stories get little more than a shrug from Republicans.
Despite all that, what could bring Cawthorn down is her affair, or whatever, with a man. That tells us a lot about GOP family values.
