A correctional officer will use his 35 years of work experience to give parents advice on how to raise their sons.
Dorian Tucker’s free webinar series – Raising Boys to Become Men – is part of the events organized by the Women’s Resource Center and will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
He said a combination of his career, 34 years of marriage and raising a son and daughter has shown that there are “certain things that are important to know about young men and how to raise them.
Mr Tucker explained: ‘I decided to take the plunge to see how I could help mothers, it started with single mothers raising sons.
“I found it to be of great interest for mothers to try to figure out how to take care of their sons, especially in adolescence.”
The next three sessions, which will also take place on April 25 and May 2, will be open to both fathers and mothers and will focus on management, leadership and coaching.
Mr Tucker said: ‘Fathers say, yeah, I get it now, some of the things I was doing were okay and some of the things I could probably do better.’
He added: “I think the best way is to arm the mothers and fathers of the house.
“If you catch them early, then hopefully they don’t come into gangs and things of that nature.
“As a correctional, you have the opportunity to have conversations with these young men when they arrive.
“Some of the things they get into aren’t because they wanted to, but because they were looking for a father figure.”
Mr Tucker said his sessions will offer advice that parents with sons of all ages can “add to their arsenal”.
